Developing Healthy Coping Skills for Stress

Coping skills are essential to develop because they help you in stress, allowing you to calm down. To develop coping skills, you first need to identify your stress signals; only then can you change them. First, identify your stress signals, such as physical signs (headaches, tension, fatigue), cognitive signs (negative thinking), behavioral signs (procrastination, withdrawal), and emotional signs (irritability, anxiety, feeling overwhelmed), etc.

If you are feeling all these, you can use techniques to calm yourself down, such as deep belly breathing, grounding exercises (5-4-3-2-1), splashing cold water, and a quick body scan (to release tension). For physical stress release, you can do exercises (walking, yoga, and dancing), stretching, or go for a nature walk—this will improve your mental health.

Express your emotions and validate them. You can validate your feelings through journaling or by talking to a trusted friend. Creative arts (drawing, painting, music) or writing a letter to your younger self can also help with emotional expression. Practice mindfulness meditation and adopt healthy lifestyle habits—give yourself daily time for body awareness exercises and limit unhealthy habits such as caffeine, phone addiction, and irregular sleep schedules, etc.

Build your support system—people who will stand by your during times of stress—and if you need professional support, definitely seek it; don’t hesitate to ask for help. Coping skills are not meant to eliminate stress, but to help you manage it effectively.

A pro tip is to create your own stress first-aid kit with your favorite coping skills that will help you manage stress unexpectedly.
