Cultivating a Playful Mindset for Exploration

Perfection is the enemy of exploration, so give yourself permission to make bad art. If you end up making bad art, don't feel sad—take it as an opportunity. Schedule regular time for creative play where you show up and experiment. No goals or outcomes are required—just let yourself enjoy the moment.

Use childhood materials like crayons, finger paints, clay, etc., and reconnect with the joy of childhood. Create without a purpose and don’t worry about what it will mean. Combine unlikely things to create something different, such as putting random objects together, mixing art forms, and writing poetry, etc.

Movement unlocks different thinking, so use your whole body—for example, dance before painting or take a walk to generate ideas. Turn challenges into games and reward yourself for trying new things. And the most important thing is to let go of expert expectations and celebrate not knowing.

Play is the serious work of creativity. The best creative ideas emerge when you explore freely as your authentic self.
